The Twitter feed offers a nice selection of news and specials as well as friendly interaction between the company and its users, answering questions and even providing customer support.

Alice.com is rolling out a new look.

The site’s design is being simplified and now includes four easy-to-find tabs across the top as well as small icons representing the different “rooms” Alice offers products for.

The homepage also features a new flyout login form and most of the subtle background patterns featured throughout the site are gone, replaced with solid colors.

What didn’t change, however, is the easy access to your stored products as well as the handy flyout product views that superimpose the product shot over the page you’re viewing, negating the need for a page reload.

From a visual standpoint, Alice seems to be moving more toward a look that’s dominated by the blues seen on its easily-recognizable boxes.

Overall, this new look does a great job of making navigation a bit easier as well as getting rid of some of the unnecessary clutter.

The first layer of protection comes from a giant zipper storage bag.

Incidentally, the bag comes in handy for packaging large food items for the refrigerator or freezer, so be sure to save them for future use.

The second level of leak protection is a piece of tape over the cap. Alice seems to have put quite a bit of time into selecting what tape to use as it’s very easy to remove, doesn’t leave sticky residue on the plastic cap and still keeps the detergent well sealed.

I really appreciated that the tape was easy to peel off the bottle since so often packaging becomes next to impossible to remove without power tools.

The sealed bag isn’t only for detergents, by the way. I’ve also received mouthwash delivered this way.

One of the biggest concerns most people have when trying a new retailer is whether they’re getting the best price.

Alice has taken care of that to some degree by offering up easy-to-read price comparison charts on items carried by other online retailers.

There is one catch, however. Alice doesn’t provide pricing data for stores such as Walmart or your local grocery store.

While Alice’s prices are, for the most part, competitive with “big box” stores, the prices aren’t always the lowest, though they are usually only off by a small amount.

However, I find it worth the tiny extra cost since it saves me time and gas from having to run to the store. Plus, I often end up saving more than a bit of my sanity, which is priceless.

Alice seems to focus on offering items in smaller sizes, especially heavier items such as pet food and cat litter.

Interestingly, some of these products come in sizes I’ve never seen in a store: such as cat litter that comes in what appears to a plastic gallon milk jug.

This strategy of offering smaller sizes is no doubt to save on shipping costs. This could be disadvantageous for larger families who go through items quickly. However, for busy working professionals who live alone (like me) or with just a significant other, the sizes will work well.

That said, large families could still make use of Alice by simply ordering multiple quantities of the smaller packages. In fact, I’ve noticed that having smaller packages is actually rather helpful since it make it easier to divide products between upstairs and downstairs.

Alice only offers a limited selection of non-perishable grocery items, but there are other places to turn to if you’re in search of desktop food shopping.

My favorite is Amazon’s Grocery section. Not only does Amazon offer a wider selection of grocery items, including a great selection of natural and organic items, but it comes backed with the power of Amazon’s nationwide distribution network. Plus, you can use your existing Amazon account to purchase items.

Unfortunately, Amazon’s selection is also pretty much limited to non-perishable food items. While some major cities are served by online grocers that offer delivery of fresh meats, produce and frozen goods, most of the country doesn’t have the option available.

One of the things I like most about Alice is the fact that it’s cut down on the number of unnecessary trips to the store.

Despite my best efforts to be organized and make shopping lists, I constantly find myself forgetting an item and having to make a trip to the store for it. There’s something that’s such a pain about running to the store for just one item. There’s the trouble of trying to find a good time to go to the store and then the hassle of finding a parking space, going into the store, finding the item, waiting in line, paying and then driving home only to discover you’ve forgotten another item.
